Klezmer Music and Yiddish Folk Songs

BUPKES is a group of musicians dedicated to preserving and performing
Yiddish folk songs and Klezmer tunes that were widely played in Jewish communities throughout eastern Europe into the first half of the twentieth century. In more recent years there has been a revival of Klezmer music, which is characterized by expressive minor keys and by the lively rhythms of its dance melodies.
The members of Bupkes are: Penny Myers, vocalist: Penny is the cantorial soloist at Temple Beth Zion. Before that she was cantor at Temple Sinai. Alan Wishnoff, violin: Alan is a partner in the trial department of the law firm Phillips Lytle LLP. Steve Rosenthal, soprano sax: Steve is a long-time member of the Amherst Saxophone Quartet. Marty Kerker, keyboard: Marty is a professional photographer who owns and manages the Wilmack Photography Studio. Tom Wiswall, double bass: like Alan, Tom is a partner in the trial department of Phillips Lytle. Buddy Rein, percussion: Buddy is a retired pharmacist who has performed professionally as a percussionist for more than forty years, and with several local Klezmer groups.
